This is not a sandy desert but rocky desert. It’s a desert in the border of the world deserts belt, and has 200 milliliters of water per square meter per year

The Judean desert is the place where the Christian monasticism evolved and flourished in the holy land from the Byzantine period

Christian monks settled in the wilderness of Judea as early as the fourth century. Between centuries V and VI were founded here more than 70 monasteries and monastic hermits.

Luke 10:30-37 – The Parable of the Good Samaritan

30 In reply Jesus said: “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he was attacked by robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. 31 A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. 32 So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. 34 He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35 The next day he took out two denarii[c] and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.’

36 “Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?”

37 The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.”

Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”

Caves of Qumran

Qumran is an archeological site where the remarkable discovery of the Dead Sea scrolls took place in 1946. Those are the oldest Manuscripts of the bible found so far

It is mostly accepted amongst the researchers that the Essenes were the people to live in this place and that they wrote and hided the Dead Sea scrolls in the Qumran caves around.

The Essenes were a Jewish sect in the 2’nd temple period that left Jerusalem and came to live in the desert where they felt closer to god and could practice their way of living.

They lived in a communal life form with no personal property. They lived in complete celibacy. They emphasized and practiced the ritual bath as a mean of purification.

John the Baptist that lived in this area is assumed to be influenced by the Essenes with regards to the baptism for the purpose of cleansing of sins

The Dead Sea (also called the Salt Sea), is a salt lake – With 34.2% salinity It is 9.6 times as salty as the ocean.

So, the Dead Sea is called this way because no life can exist in it due to the high concentration of salts.

It is actually a big lake without any exit and the only source of water that feeds it is the Jordan river which ends in the dead sea

The water contain many minerals such as magnesium, potassium, brome, Chloris and many more that are used in various industries such as cosmetics, medicine, agriculture and Aviation industry.

This is the reason why you can simply float with no effort on the water.

Masada is an isolated mountain 450 meter higher than its surroundings. The mountain contains an ancient fortification on top of an isolated rock plateau, overlooking the Dead Sea. Herod the Great built palaces for himself on the mountain and fortified Masada between 37 and 31 BCE. According to Josephus, the Siege of Masada by troops of the Roman Empire towards the end of the First Jewish–Roman War ended in the mass suicide of the 960 Sicarii rebels and their families hiding there.
